Children's Psychiatric Residential Treatment (PRTF)
Children from across the U.S. benefit from Lakemary's Psychiatric Residential Treatment Services
Lakemary provides psychiatric residential treatment and specialized education for children from across the United States on our beautiful 32-acre campus in Paola, Kansas - just 30 miles south of Kansas City. We exclusively serve children and adolescents, ages 6-21, with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) coupled with psychiatric illnesses. Therapeutic services are coordinated 24/7 across school and residential settings providing the individualized supports that each child requires to successfully return to a less restrictive, more independent environment.
We provide a structured behavioral approach for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other intellectual/developmental disabilities and co-occuring psychiatric disorders. We provide affordable, time-limited, individualized therapeutic treatment and accept both in-state and out-of-state placements.
Lakemary operates a year-round, fully accredited "on-campus" special education school. Individualized Education Plans (IEP) are developed for all students and specialized curriculum, therapy services, behavior support planning, and transition supports are provided according to each child's needs. While children are at Lakemary, they receive 24/7 therapeutic treatment in our residential and school environments achieving a seamless structured approach to help them achieve demonstrated positive outcomes. Family training and participation in the treatment process is a critical component in sustaining successful outcomes beyond Lakemary. Distance training for caregivers is provided throughout each child's stay to support a seamless transition when returning home. Lakemary staff will work closely and also travel with a child to their next placement to ensure a positive and successful transition. Following discharge, outpatient therapy may be available to help children and families ensure continued success.
Discharge planning begins upon admission with the goal focused on returning the children to a more naturalized environment. Whether that involves having them reunite with their families of origin, adoption, supported family living (foster care), or other options, students at Lakemary receive the care and treatment they need to succeed.
"Before we met all of you, we were in a desperate situation. We felt like our family was falling apart...All my life, I wanted to be a mom, and I never once thought that I wouldn't be able to control my own child...I can't believe how much six months has changed all of that. [We] felt like failures as parents, but now we realize that we do have control and [our son] can have a good life...You didn't just help a child, you saved a family. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. I will always be grateful to Lakemary." - mother of a son served in Lakemary's PRTF program
